All I could hear was banging. What in the hell? My doorbell was ringing, and someone was pounding on my front door.
“I’m coming! Holy fuck, hold on to your pants!” I yelled out.
I opened the door, and Drake pushed his way past me.
“Well, hello, Drake. Merry Christmas to you, too,” I said as I shut the door.
Is it too early to have a drink? I looked at the clock. It was just after midnight.
“Where’s your phone? Your cell phone, Scott. Turn it on.”
I rolled my eyes and shook my head. “You came over here in the middle of the night to tell me you want to use my cell phone? Buy one, old man,” I said with a chuckle.
I made my way into the kitchen. I needed coffee.
“She called.”
I stopped in my tracks and turned to look at him. “Jessie?”
He smiled and nodded.

I walked up the buckskin filly and smiled as I shook my head and thought about Whitley telling me last night that she always wanted a buckskin. She wanted to name her Tinkerbelle and give the filly the barn name Tink.

“How much for the buckskin?” I asked.

“The buckskin? You want the buckskin too?” Mr. Smith said with a laugh.

I pulled out my phone and pulled up Whitley’s name. I looked up at Mr. Smith and said, “Yes, sir, I do. I want this buckskin and I’m willing to pay whatever it takes to get her.”

He threw his head back and laughed. “Son, I’m pretty damn sure you can get a buckskin in Texas for a hell of a lot cheaper than what it will cost to get her to ya in Texas.”

I laughed and nodded my head. “Yes, sir. You’re right about that. You see there is this girl…” I started to say. He held up his hand and gave me a smile and then a wink.

“Oh Lord. Where there is a woman involved it’s bound to be trouble.” He said with a laugh.

I shook my head. “Nope. Not this one. She’s very…special to me. She happened to mention last night that she’s always wanted a buckskin filly, so you see, to me it’s a sign. I need this filly.”

He nodded his head and looked to be deep in thought.

“Girlfriend? Wife?”

I let out a gruff laugh. “No. Nothing like that, she’s just a really good friend.”

“Uh huh. Well you keep feeding yourself that bullshit son. You can have her for three thousand, and that’s a steal. Her linage would make you stand there and cry if I showed you it.”

“Why are you giving her to me for three than. If you don’t mind me asking sir?”

He turned, looked back at the filly and then started walking back to his truck.

“Because once I had a really good friend too, and I stood in almost the same exact spot you’re standing in when I asked her daddy to buy a filly from him to give to her as a gift. Fifty-two years later and I still call her my best friend, but I also call her my wife.”

I watched as he told one of his foremen to get the horse ready for transport because she was going to Texas. I smiled as I thought about Whitley being my best friend. It really seems like she was turning out to be just that. I looked forward to our daily talks and even more forward to our text messages.

I clicked on message and began typing her out a text.

Layton: Hey CG! What are you doing right now?

Whitley: Hey cowboy! I just got done working out and I’m all sweaty. I’m about to take a shower and then read some. What are you doing?

I closed my eyes and tried so damn hard not to picture her all sweaty and then sitting in her bed reading…with her vibrator close by. I opened them again and typed out my reply.

Layton: Playing with horses.

Whitley: Hmm…I don’t know whether to say lucky you or lucky horses.

Layton: Hey Whit. Can I tell you something?

Whitley: I don’t know…can you?

I rolled my eyes and let out a laugh

Layton: Okay Courtney….I just wanted to tell you I miss you CG. I’m looking forward to seeing you again.

I sat there for about three minutes cursing myself for hitting send. Damn it, Layton! Friends only. Friends only.

When my phone buzzed I was scared to death to open it. When I did I busted out laughing. It was a picture of Whitley with a stuffed horse. A fucking stuffed buckskin horse. She took a selfie with the damn thing and it looked like she was blowing me a kiss.

Whitley: Tinkerbelle and I can’t wait to see you either! She is super jealous you’re playing with horses and I must admit, so am I! I miss you and your stupid arrogant attitude. I kind of miss your smile too, but I won’t ever admit that.

Layton: You kind of just put it in print that you like my smile.

Whitley: Well damn.

I started laughing and looked back at the filly. I walked up to her and began scratching her neck.

“Oh baby girl. You’re going to fall in love with your new mom. She’s beautiful, with piercing green eyes, and a smile that will melt your heart. The filly started jerking her head up and down as my phone went off again with a text message notification.

            Whitley: Bring me back a surprise cowboy!

            Layton: If I see something I think you’ll like I will for sure! See you in a few days CG.

As I jumped into the truck I was renting, I couldn’t help but smile. I couldn’t wait to see the look on Whitley’s face when she met her Tink. Yep. I’m pretty sure Whit is slowly taking Reed’s place as my best friend and I was totally okay with that.

            Whitley: Hey cowboy…I really do like your smile. Talk to you tonight.

Yep. I’m totally okay with that.
